Paving for the Patio

Originpaving

This site looks interesting - we will hopefully be getting a patio laid in August so we need to choose some slabs or paving stones. This company have some good ones.

Hi,
Just found your blog, looks good. I am awaiting decision on planning ,hope to have it soon, but have no idea about the foundations of house. I keep hearing raft, or you may get away with strip? I kinda know what they are but don't know who to use for it or which method to go with...

I'm no expert - but I know a bit more now than I did 12 months ago.
Raft is the easy option for the builder - it's a big slab of concrete reinforced with steel. It's more expensive in materials - and probably cheaper in labour?
It is recommended for ground that is prone to movement. We had a raft - but than again everyone round here seems to do it - it's the safe option.
Strip is where a trench is dug to coincide with each wall - and then filled with concrete.
As I said - I'm no expert but raft seems to be the preferred option in this area. (Co. Roscommon Ireland)

What kind of money did it entail to do the raft? If you don't mind the question.

I don't really have a breakdown for just the raft. The builder charged for foundation, walls and roof in one lump sum - so I don't really know what the raft was. Sorry.
The concrete and steel - I probably could dig out what they cost me - but then each raft should be designed specifically for each house - and mine wouldn't be the same as yours.
